About the Item

ARTVER Art Deco elephant glass vase, Belgian, circa 1930–1935. A striking example of Belgian Art Deco glass, combining glossy black glass with contrasting frosted silver-grey decoration and a signed geometric design. The spherical body rests on a subtly raised circular foot and curves inward towards the round opening. Its surface plays with contrasting finishes: highly polished black glass alternates with broad matte areas, creating a strong graphic effect as light moves across the rounded form. The continuous decoration depicts stylized elephants set against an abstract landscape with pyramids. Reduced to angular planes and sharply drawn outlines, the animals have an almost Cubist graphic quality characteristic of the more progressive decorative language of the 1930s. A large elephant dominates the composition, accompanied by a smaller elephant and simplified pyramids extending around the body. The restrained black-and-silver palette further emphasizes the modern geometry of the design. The vase belongs to the Belgian ARTVER production associated with De Rupel in Boom and is stylistically related to designs by Paul Heller. The distinctive “ARTVER” signature is incorporated directly into the decoration. As this particular elephant design cannot be securely documented as a Heller design, no definitive attribution is made. A distinctive piece of Belgian Art Deco glass, combining exotic imagery, geometric abstraction and sophisticated surface treatment in a compact sculptural form.
