About the Item

This exquisite Établissements Gallé vase depicts crab apple branches in cameo glass, with each fruit rendered in subtle variations of hue and tonal value. The branches and buds are enlivened by finely chased linework that suggests delicate veining, while touches of brown glass at the edges of the green leaves evoke the natural browning of foliage. The background gently graduates from warm amber to white and is completed by an applied brown collar. Item #: YG-22091 Artist: Émile Gallé Country: France Circa: 1925 Dimensions: 12" height, 9" diameter. Materials: Glass Signed: Gallé Literature: A. Duncan, G. de Bartha, Glass by Gallé, London, 1984, p. 197, pl. 299 for a related vase in a different color combination; B. Hakenjos, Emile Gallé: Keramik, Glas, und Möbel des Art Nouveau, Munich, 2012 p. 154 for another vase of this model in a different color combination. Macklowe Gallery Curator's Notes: Many species of crab apple are native to Japan, and crabapple species & cultivars have traditionally been popular choices for planting in gardens, in pots, and as bonsai. Their flowering branches are used even today in the traditional flower arrangements known as ikebana. Perhaps more importantly, their flowers & form have long been represented in Japanese art and celebrated in its literature and poetry.
