About the Item

This is a striking French Art Deco ceramic vase by Edmond Lachenal, executed in one of the firm's most desirable turquoise crackle glazes. The sculptural form is particularly unusual, combining a gently waisted rectangular neck with softly swelling sides and a stepped pedestal base, resulting in a silhouette that feels both architectural and organic. The vivid blue glaze displays an attractive, even craquelure throughout, emphasizing the vase's refined modeling and handcrafted character. The underside bears the hand-painted inscription "Lachenal 619 France," identifying the model and confirming its French origin. While Lachenal is celebrated for its Art Nouveau ceramics, the workshop also produced a series of boldly modern forms during the late 1920s and 1930s that embraced the geometric aesthetic of the Art Deco movement. This example is an excellent representation of that transition, with clean lines softened by voluptuous curves and a luminous monochromatic glaze. The vase presents beautifully and is in good vintage condition. There is one small glaze flake/chip, shown in the photographs, along with minor wear and areas of edge roughness consistent with age and the original manufacturing process. These do not detract from its strong visual presence. A sophisticated decorative object that works equally well as a vase, sculptural accent or standalone work of French ceramic art.
