About the Item

An exquisite contemporary porcelain vase, hand-painted in vivid blue, green, and pink across an elegantly shaped body set against a dimpled platinum ground. The design showcases Japanese toad lilies — known in Japanese as hototogisu, a name the flower shares with the lesser cuckoo, whose speckled plumage its spotted petals are said to resemble. Long valued in Japanese gardens and poetry for blooming late, into autumn, when most flowers have already faded, the toad lily carries associations of quiet, understated beauty rather than showiness, a fitting subject for a piece built on subtlety of surface as much as color. The piece is signed by an acclaimed master working in the Imari-Arita tradition; in 2016, the British Museum added a large lidded jar by this same artist, in the Imari-Arita polychrome enamel style, to its collection of contemporary Japanese porcelain. He has received numerous awards for his work and is particularly recognized for his gold and platinum technique. A full artist profile is available upon request. What distinguishes this vase within the artist's body of work is its dimpled surface: the unfired porcelain shell is impressed with hundreds of small dimples before gold and platinum are applied in the final stage, so that the metal pools and thins unevenly across each crater. The result is a platinum ground with genuine physical depth rather than a flat metallic sheen, the cratering catching light differently across the surface as the viewer moves around the piece. The artist continues this platinum treatment onto the vase's interior as well, extending the effect beyond what is immediately visible from the front. The floral design itself is executed in the artist's signature "fired-on gold" method: the polychrome overglaze is fired at roughly 800°C, followed by gold and platinum applied and fired again at a slightly lower temperature to preserve their luster, with a single piece passing through the kiln as many as five to ten times.
