About the Item

Ceramic vases by Guido Gambone, 1950s. Signed under the base. Biography Guido Gambone (June 27, 1909, Montella, Italy–1969, Florence) is one of the most important Italian ceramists of the 20th century. Guido Gambone defined a unique style in which he fused traditional ceramic methods with amorphous forms that similarly echoed the art of the past and its modern days. His dynamic objects, in which he often experimented with enamels and patterns, gained great popularity and today are precious objects held in private and museum collections, such as that of the Brooklyn Museum. Born in Montella, Campania, a southern Italian region, Gambone received his first training in the art of ceramics at the Manifattura Artistica Ceramica Salernitana, in nearby Vietri sul Mare. He continued his studies at the Salerno Ceramics Industry (ICS) and in 1935 took over the management of the facility. The following year he moved north to Florence with fellow ceramists Vincenzo Procida and Francesco Solimene to assist in the production of the Cantagalli ceramic company, which took its name from the founder Ulisse Cantagalli (1839–1901) and specialized in reviving the rich colors and motifs of the majolica tradition. In the early 1940s, Gambone collaborated with his brother Remigio and friend Andrea D'Arienzo to found the La Faenzarella ceramics factory in Vietri Marina, Salerno. Although the company initially grew slowly under wartime conditions, Gambone won awards for his pieces made at La Faenerella only a few years later. In 1947, for example, Gambone received the Faenza Prize for a ceramic panel he made himself. The brilliance of this phase of Gambone's ceramic design lay in the use of thick glazes, often made more viscous by the addition of sand. He continued in this style until the 1950s, when he founded a second laboratory, La Tirrena, in Florence. In this new space, Gambone continued his previous projects La Faenerella working in larger and even more elaborate forms. Here, he joined forces once again with ceramicist Vincenzo Procida and also worked collaboratively with his son, Bruno. The year 1950 also marked the showcase of one of Gambone’s collaborative works at a group exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum in New York, and the following year Gambone enjoyed his first solo showing at the Galleria Il Milione in Milan. By the end of the decade, Gambone had achieved international acclaim for his pieces. He upheld his dedication to his work until 1967, when the La Tirrena workshop closed its doors. Gambone died two years later at the age of 60.

Vintage Italian ceramic vase with geometric motif by Aldo Londi for Bitossi (circa 1960s). Discovered in North Central Italy, this particular piece has been well kept over the years. It has a decorative band around its centre with a geometric motif of concentric squares in turquoise. On either side top and bottom, etched circles follow the form of the piece. It is weighty with a slightly concave base with 'Italy' etched in the underside in that Bitossi 'font'.
