About the Item

Paris Porcelain Baluster Vases, Pair, Hand-Painted Botanical Bouquets (69 characters) Circa 1840–1860 This magnificent pair of Paris porcelain (Vieux Paris) vases exemplifies the technical mastery of French hard-paste porcelain at the height of the mid-nineteenth-century luxury trade. Each vase takes the classic baluster form, with a swelling body rising from a narrow foot to a waisted neck and everted rim. The principal side of each vase carries a large and complex botanical bouquet painted in a dense, naturalistic style, one anchored by a magnificent bearded iris above cabbage roses, a white camellia-form rose, stocks, and scarlet anemones, the other by a flamed parrot tulip above delphinium, a white anemone, asters, and a full pink rose. The reverse of each is reserved for a single large specimen study, a spray of pink cabbage roses with buds and sprigs of blue plumbago on one, and a pair of tulips, one scarlet and one boldly flamed in red and yellow, on the other. Scattered sprigs drift across the necks and shoulders against a brilliant white ground, and the rims are finished with concentric gilt bands, the feet with a single gilt line. The undersides bear incised numerals, 7 and 8, almost certainly workshop marks recording the mold size or the repairer responsible for assembling the form. Like most Vieux Paris wares of this quality, the vases carry no factory mark. In the mid-nineteenth century Paris was the capital of the European luxury trade, and the numerous private porcelain factories collectively known as Vieux Paris produced wares of a quality that rivaled the royal manufactory at Sèvres, most often unmarked, relying instead on the whiteness of the paste and the accomplishment of the painting. Substantial vases of this scale were made for the mantelpiece or the grand sideboard, frequently in pairs or larger garnitures.
