A rare and beautiful Art Nouveau / Jugend / Arts and Crafts vase with amazing glaze. Designed by Gabriel Burmeister and made by Gabriel Keramik in Sweden, 1920s. Great original condition - no chips, cracks or crazing. Signed with makers mark. Gabriel Burmeister (1877–1946) was a Swedish sculptor, ceramic artist, and industrial pioneer who played an important role in the development of Swedish ceramics during the first half of the twentieth century. He is best remembered as the founder of the ceramic factory Gabriel, established in 1925 in Timmernabben, Småland, which became one of Sweden's most distinctive producers of artistic and functional ceramics. Burmeister was trained as a sculptor and brought a strong sense of form, proportion, and craftsmanship to his ceramic work. Before founding his own factory, he worked with sculpture and architectural decoration, creating reliefs, ornaments, and decorative works that reflected the early twentieth century's interest in integrating art into everyday surroundings. His artistic language was based on simplified, powerful forms and a close relationship between material, texture, and function. At Gabriel, Burmeister combined artistic ambition with industrial production. The factory produced stoneware, household ceramics, decorative objects, and architectural ceramics, often characterised by robust shapes and carefully developed glazes. His aim was to create ceramics that were both useful and aesthetically refined, continuing the Swedish tradition of combining craftsmanship with modern industrial methods. Burmeister was also connected to S:t Eriks Lervarufabriker in Stockholm, where he contributed as a sculptor and designer of architectural ceramics. His experience with large-scale ceramic production and collaboration with architects helped shape his later work at Gabriel. Through both his own factory and his earlier artistic practice, he contributed to the growing importance of ceramics as an independent art form in Sweden. During the 1930s and 1940s, Gabriel developed a reputation for high-quality stoneware and artistic ceramics. After Burmeister's death in 1946, the factory continued under new leadership and remained an important name in Swedish ceramics, carrying forward the traditions he established. Gabriel Burmeister's significance lies not only in the objects he created but also in his role as a founder and entrepreneur who helped shape Swedish ceramic history. By bringing together sculpture, design, and industrial production, he created a lasting legacy that connects the artistic ideals of early twentieth-century Sweden with the modern ceramic industry.
