Retier Porcelain Vase with Swan Handles and Gilt Bronze Mounts - France - Early 20th Century An elaborate French porcelain vase by Retier, executed in a Rococo Revival taste and dating probably to the early 20th century. The vase features a richly colored burgundy ground with extensive gilt decoration and a large hand-painted romantic pastoral scene framed within an ornate cartouche. Particularly notable are the sculptural swan-form handles and heavily detailed gilt mounts, which give the piece a strong theatrical and decorative presence. The painted reserve depicts an idealized courtship scene in the 18th-century manner, surrounded by raised gilt ornamentation inspired by French Rococo design. The vase stands on a square base with pierced-style gilt decoration and retains its original overall composition. The underside bears the Retier mark. Based on the visible mark and decorative style, the vase appears to date from the early 20th century, likely circa 1900-1930. Further archival research may provide a more precise attribution and production date. The piece reflects the revival interest in French aristocratic decorative arts popular during the Belle Époque and early 20th century decorative period.
