About the Item

Sculptural Murano glass vase dating from circa 1960–1970, created within the tradition of Italian Mid-Century Modern art glass. The compact, vertically oriented form is carved into a series of sharply defined geometric facets, producing a prismatic silhouette with alternating planes, edges, and recessed angles. As the light moves across the surface, these facets create changing reflections and reveal the depth of the layered glass within. The vase features a rich purple inner layer enclosed within transparent glass, characteristic of the Sommerso technique. This method consists of immersing one or more layers of colored glass into successive gathers of molten glass, creating a distinct separation between the internal color and the clear outer casing. The later cutting and polishing of the surface exposes the architectural structure of the form and intensifies the interaction between color, transparency, and light. The piece presents characteristics associated with the geometric vocabulary of Alessandro Mandruzzato, whose Murano production is recognized for monumental prismatic shapes, sharply cut surfaces, and an emphasis on glass as a sculptural material. It belongs more broadly to the Venetian tradition of faceted Sommerso glass developed by several Murano workshops during the postwar period. With its compact architectural profile, rich internal color, and highly articulated faceting, this vase functions as both a decorative object and a small-scale glass sculpture. It is particularly suited to modern, minimalist, Italian Modern, and Mid-Century-inspired interiors.
