About the Item

Incredible modernist cast glass vase by noted contemporary Japanese artist, Shun Kumagai resembling an old Roman glass vessel from another time. Depending on the light, these pieces change color and will almost glow when the sun hits them. The composition of colors in these pieces are from the result of metals being fused with the glass. Born in Akita, Japan, in 1983, he pursued a degree in glass in Akita. After completing his studies, he worked with glass in Toyama for five years. In 2017, he relocated back to Akita and currently operates his own glass studio. His creative process involves first creating a wax prototype, which is then used to mold gypsum. Finally, cast glass is poured into the mold. The unpredictable nature of convection currents and changes within the kiln during the firing process adds an element of surprise to his work. The thick layer of glass poured onto the mold captures light and interacts with the clay glazed on the surface and the metal poured into it, resulting in a complex and visually captivating scene. While his creations evoke a sense of ancient glass and ruins, they also exude a sense of new light and hope. Kumagai's work is very in demand in Japan. He exhibits nationally and internationally.
