About the Item

French Art Deco Stoneware Vase by Gilbert Méténier, Gannat, circa 1920. Important French Art Deco stoneware vase by Gilbert Méténier, produced in Gannat, France, circa 1920. Listed as “Grand Vase Moderne” in period documentation, this tall vase exemplifies the modernist direction of early French Art Deco ceramics. The vase features a stylized Art Deco decor with strong verticality and refined proportions. Crafted in high-quality stoneware, it reflects Méténier’s mastery of form, glaze, and firing techniques. The piece is signed “G. Méténier” twice and additionally stamped “Figeac”, indicating the retailer. Dimensions: Height: 16.7 in (42.3 cm) Width: 6.3 in (16 cm) Depth: 5.7 in (14.4 cm) A rare and elegant example of French Art Deco ceramic design, highly desirable for collectors of early 20th-century stoneware. Gilbert Méténier was a French ceramic artist and manufacturer active in the early 20th century. Around 1917, he founded the Grès d’Art Méténier workshop in Gannat, together with his father Louis Méténier. After his father’s death in 1922, Gilbert Méténier significantly expanded production, developing a distinctive body of Art Deco stoneware noted for its refined forms and sophisticated glazes. The workshop employed a team of skilled workers and used local clay from Echassières, rich in kaolin, giving Méténier stoneware its characteristic light tone and fine texture. Glazes were applied by hand, often using metallic oxides such as copper and iron, and firing was carried out in wood-fired kilns fueled by oak. Méténier personally oversaw the creation of molds and glazes, demonstrating a deep commitment to color research and firing techniques. His works were distributed through major Parisian department stores (including Le Bon Marché, Printemps, and La Samaritaine) as well as prominent spa and resort towns. The factory ceased activity in June 1940 at the arrival of German troops, and Gilbert Méténier reportedly destroyed his molds before leaving the region. Today, his work is highly regarded as an important contribution to French Art Deco ceramics.
