About the Item

Blue Fish vessel or vase was created by Paul Willsea and Carol O'Brien as a part of series that consists of bowls and vases which combine a blown vessel with a cast base. The base is cast to give the pieces a stable foundation while drawing references to architecture. The blown bowl seamlessly emerges from the cast base and is a fluid and graceful counterpoint. The vessel is clearly signed by the artists in etching on the bottom. Paul Willsea and Carol O’Brien have worked together since 1983. They live in the Finger Lakes Region of Western New York. Paul and Carol have intentionally chosen to keep their business small; each piece is hand made by them. They blow and form each piece individually primarily from glass they have formulated and made themselves. By combining blown and cast glass Paul and Carol create forms that express movement and fluidity of form. Their color palette, which ranges from subtle to bold, is achieved through the use of various formulations of metallic oxides mixed into the molten glass. Willsea earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in World History from Alfred University and has pursued further studies in Glass at the renowned Pilchuck Glass Center in Washington State. Prior to establishing his own studio in 1981, he apprenticed with master glass artists Ira Sapir and Randy Strong. O'Brien received her Bachelor of Arts degree, with honors in Art, from Hamilton College. Willsea O'Brien glassworks have been shown and represented at galleries and juried exhibitions throughout the USA including the California Crafts Museum in San Francisco, The Store at the American Crafts Museum in New York City, and the store at the Corning Museum of glass.

Henry Summa Sommerso Helix Vase, American Studio Art Glass

Henry Summa Sommerso Helix Vase, American Studio Art Glass

By Henry Summa

Located in Clifton Springs, NY

Graphic art glass vase was created with intertwining spiral coil helixes in dark red and pale-yellow glass fused in clear glass layer; the clear glass is encasing the deep, complex blue glass core in sommerso technique. The placement of helixes in clear glass layer creates an unexpected play of light and shadows, adding depth and definition to the piece. Minimal shape of the vase allows the bold flow of the pattern to take the center stage. The vase is signed and dated by the artist in etching on the bottom; rare, hard to find example of New Mexico studio glass would make a great gift to any studio glass or art collector. Henry Summa (1949-2008) has been working in glass since 1972. His early training in the glass arts was based on an apprenticeship at renowned Glory Hole Glassworks in New Mexico. Canyon Road Studio, known then as Glory Hole Glassworks, was owned by Peter Vanderlaan...
