About the Item

Exquisitely carved in the 1980s by an Italian-immigrant marble atelier in San Bernardo, Santiago, this remarkable mid-century-inspired ashtray embodies the sophistication and material richness of Chile’s finest artisan production. Created in one of the few workshops that survived the country’s military dictatorship, it represents both exceptional craftsmanship and a rare cultural legacy. Sculpted from sumptuous Mármol Café marble, the piece showcases extraordinary depth of color—espresso brown layered with caramel, gold, and warm amber veining, accentuated by natural mineral inclusions that give the surface a dramatic, high-end presence. Substantial, heavy, and elegantly polished, it has a refined sculptural quality suited for elevated interiors. In excellent vintage condition with no chips or cracks. A natural textured vein (see pencil close-up) can be felt to the touch—an inherent characteristic of genuine marble, not damage. A charming personal detail: my father gifted this ashtray to my mother in the 1980s; their marriage didn’t endure, but this ashtray certainly did. A striking accent for mid-century, modernist, or organic contemporary spaces—ideal as an ashtray, jewelry catchall, or decorative objet.
