About the Item

"Holly Brand Chocolate" is the theme of this tin "Charger" as noted at the base border. They were turn of the century chocolate makers. This is a very RARE "Charger" and highly sought after by advertising collectors; exemplifying the proverbial attractive woman "Marcelle" as the subject of the hand painted and lithographed, larger than usual tray at 19" diameter. "Marcelle" was, no doubt, a well known beauty at the time and appeared on several other American Art Work signs and trays. She was the first "Gibson Girl"; a made up female figure representing the new ideal independent, and well educated, free thinking woman. Women's suffrage was not far behind. The metal charger is completely original in every respect and is in excellent condition with strong colors, hand painted border perimeter, crisp figures, the genesis and manufacturer at the base "The American Art Works". The copyright date of 1910 appears on the same line along with the location of the company is Coshocton, Ohio. There is no touch up or restoration of any kind. There are a few scratches in the field, as there would be for a serving tray, but obviously very little used as you can see by the images of the surface. "The American Works" company was the standard for the production of high quality tin advertising signs; especially after having purchased their highly accredited competition "The Meeks Company" a few years earlier. . This is a wonderful piece, highly sought after by soda fountain and "barware" collectors, along with those seeking quality advertising, or simply for someone looking for an outstanding, stand alone, unique item of Americana. The value is in the condition, it's unique size, and the rarity (you won't find another one noted or for sale on the internet). Please note that this a "charger" versus a serving tray and much more difficult to find than a serving tray. They are differentiated by both their size (chargers are larger) and the fact that a tray has a higher and more definitive and vertical border edge to hold glasses and bottled on it; while a charger maintains a lower and more gradual edge for use in a place setting for each individual guest to put numerous plates and serving dishes on it through the course of a meal. Dimensions: 19" diameter x 1 1/8" high Provenance: from my own personal collection having acquired this hard to find charger in 1995. from an esteemed collection of advertising Note: I am a second generation antiques dealer and have been in business for 50 years; I am also a member of several prestigious antique associations. Thus, I am well qualified to inspect and evaluate the products I offer for sale and I guarantee them to be authentic and as I have described. I have examined this under both a black light and 10 power loop.

Art Nouveau Nude Decorated Lidded Porcelain Jar, Limoges, French, Circa 1905

By Limoges

Uniquely decorated porcelain Limoges jar with a wide winged span nude woman and a duck flying out of her hair, perhaps beckoning her to join in the flight. Her legs and feet end as one "a la mermaid". She is quite beautiful and is holding a bouquet of flowers in front of her. The same image appears on the other side. She is hand painted with brown hair, skin tones, with white and black detail to the "butterfly like" double wings. The duck is painted brown and black. Two gold leaf bands circumvents the vessel at the bottom and two thirds up. A blue band above the gold band at the base completes the hand painted decoration of the exterior. The interior of the jar is painted a light colored lime green. The underneath is clearly marked "P L Limoges...
