About the Item

An exceptional, fine and impressive antique German silver beaker; an addition to our continental silverware collection. This exceptional antique German silver beaker has a subtly tapering cylindrical form. The body of the beaker is embellished with chased scrolling leaf and floral ornamentation, accented with horizontal bands of tooled decoration. The decoration to the body incorporates a contemporary engraved initial 'MAM' surmounted with a coronet to one side and to the other a bright cut engraved crest of a dove holding an olive-branch, stood on an arrowhead. The upper rim is encompassed with an applied moulded border. This exceptional 19th century silver beaker is supported by three impressive ball style feet. The base of this exceptional example of antique silverware retains the silversmith's centre punch mark, in addition to the German state mark and maker's mark (FE). The interior of this exceptional beaker retains the original gilding. Condition This fine antique 19th century beaker is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and is in exceptional condition. The chased decoration is very sharp. The German hallmarks struck to the underside of the beaker are all very clear. Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this piece of antique silverware. A fine and impressive antique Victorian English sterling silver vase with military interest (Durham Light Infantry); an addition to our ornamental silverware collection. This fine antique Victorian sterling silver vase has a tapering cylindrical form to a domed circular spreading foot. The upper and lower portions of the body of the vase are embellished with embossed and chased stylized scrolling leaf and bead decoration in a swirl design. The body is further ornamented with a band of six cartouches amidst a shaped border accented with a leaf motif between each; four of the cartouches remain vacant. To one side there is a contemporary bright cut engraved crest of the Durham Light Infantry amidst the inscription ‘Presented to Officers, 3rd Bn, The Durham Light Infantry’, with the presentation inscription ‘Officers Race, won by, Lieut H J Sowerby, 1887’ to the other side. The upper rim of this impressive vase is encircled with an applied moulded border to the rim. The vase retains the original gilt interior. In 1758 General John Lambton of County Durham first raised the 68th Regiment of Foot as part of the British Army. This later amalgamated with another regiment to become The Durham Light Infantry in 1881. Condition This antique Victorian vase...
