About the Item

Swedish Art Deco Shaker by Folke Arström for GAB, 1936 A striking and architecturally composed cocktail shaker designed in 1936 by Folke Arström for Guldsmedsaktiebolaget (GAB), Sweden. An exceptional example of Scandinavian Art Deco at its most refined, this iconic model embodies the functional elegance and geometric clarity that came to define Swedish design in the late 1930s. Executed in nysilver (silver plate), the shaker presents a sculptural, faceted body with softly curved vertical planes that catch and reflect the light with subtle brilliance. The restrained fluted detailing at the base adds a rhythmic accent, enhancing its streamlined silhouette. The contrasting black bakelite lid, boldly stepped and cylindrical, crowns the composition with graphic precision—an unmistakable nod to the machine-age aesthetic of the period. The interplay between polished metal and deep black bakelite creates a sophisticated monochrome palette, entirely characteristic of the Art Deco movement while remaining distinctly Scandinavian in its restraint. The interior retains its original strainer insert, underscoring both functionality and thoughtful design. Folke Arström, later internationally recognized for his industrial designs and contributions to modern Scandinavian aesthetics, demonstrated here an early mastery of proportion, material contrast, and architectural form. Produced by GAB—one of Sweden’s foremost silversmithing firms—this piece stands as both a utilitarian object and a sculptural statement. A timeless design classic and a coveted addition to any serious collection of Scandinavian modern or Art Deco metalwork. Wear consistent with age and use.
