About the Item

A rare and highly collectible bar cart designed by Geraldo de Barros for Hobjeto, one of the most influential manufacturers associated with the development of Brazilian modern design during the postwar period. Executed in wood and original casters, the design exemplifies De Barros's commitment to geometric clarity, functional elegance, and industrial production informed by modernist principles. The cart's refined architectural structure is balanced by the warmth and richness of its materials. A removable upper tray, clean linear framework, and practical mobility reflect the designer's belief that furniture should be both beautiful and useful. De Barros's work consistently merged artistic rigor with everyday functionality, resulting in objects that remain remarkably contemporary more than half a century later. Originally trained as a painter and celebrated as a pioneer of Brazilian Concrete Art and experimental photography, De Barros brought a uniquely disciplined visual language to furniture design. Through his collaborations with Hobjeto, he helped establish a distinctly Brazilian interpretation of modernism—one characterized by rational forms, honest materials, and exceptional craftsmanship. This model is particularly significant as an example from the celebrated series of bar carts designed by De Barros that achieved international recognition through exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, helping to introduce Brazilian modern design to a global audience. Today, works by De Barros are held in major museum collections and are increasingly sought after by collectors of twentieth-century design. Elegant, versatile, and historically important, this bar cart stands as an outstanding example of Geraldo de Barros's enduring contribution to modern furniture design.
