About the Item

This complete set of eight coasters was designed by Piero Fornasetti and made in Milan for exclusive sale by Saks Fifth Avenue. Each small circular dish is covered overall in a brilliant, highly reflective gold ground, against which a lithographic transfer prints a quadriga, the four-horse chariot of the Roman triumph, drawn in fine black outline and washed in pale blue, with two draped figures standing side by side in the car. The image is repeated on all eight, and the effect of the set laid out together is considerable, the mirror-bright gold throwing back the light while the cool blue of the horses holds the eye at the center. The set retains its original orange and white printed box, decorated with the palette, brushes, and the hand-and-brush device that Fornasetti used as his emblem. Piero Fornasetti (1913–1988) built a body of work of extraordinary size, some thirteen thousand objects by his own count, almost all of it made by applying printed images to functional forms. Classical subjects drawn from engraved sources ran through the work from the beginning, treated with a decorative wit rather than any antiquarian reverence, and the gold-ground pieces are among the most immediately striking things he produced. Saks Fifth Avenue was among the American retailers that commissioned Fornasetti wares for exclusive sale, and pieces carrying the Saks mark form a distinct and collectible group within the output. Small sets of this kind, made for the cocktail table, were produced in quantity but rarely survive complete, and rarer still with the original box. A complete set in its box, ready to use on a drinks tray or to keep as it is. Dimensions Diameter: 4 inches (10.2 cm) Height: ¼ inch (0.6 cm)
