About the Item

This set of six cocktail glasses combines a wide, conical bowl of thinly blown clear glass with a solid stem of deep cobalt blue, cut in long facets and tapering outward to stand directly on the table without a separate foot. The proportions are deliberately unequal, the shallow flare of the bowl set against the weight and length of the stem, and the effect is architectural rather than decorative. The stems are solid and heavy, so that the glasses stand securely despite their narrow footprint, and the blue deepens toward the base where the metal is thickest, the cut facets catching and throwing the light. A small blue disc is visible at the junction of bowl and stem, where the two gathers were joined. Ranged together, the six read as a row of blue columns beneath their clear bowls. Colored, geometric glass of this kind belongs to the reaction against functionalist design that gathered through the 1970s, when designers returned to strong color, unusual proportion, and frankly decorative form. The taste ran ahead of the Memphis group, founded in Milan in 1981, which gave the tendency its name and its most extreme expression. Sets of this type were produced by a number of European and American glasshouses, generally without marks, and are seldom attributable to a particular factory. Strong enough in color to carry a bar cart on their own, and equally effective ranged along a shelf when they are not in use.
