About the Item

Table centerpiece “Shell on dolphins” Model 2083 This table centerpiece, created as an ornament for a festively laid table and inspired by 18th-century models, was designed in 1964 by the Munich sculptor Franz Xaver Lorch. Franz Xaver Lorch, born on 9 September 1899 in Sigmaringen, worked as an independent artist for the Nymphenburg Porcelain Manufactory between 1934 and 1971. Franz Xaver Lorch The trained sculptor completed his studies in 1923 at the Academy in Munich under Professor Kurz, following many years at the School of Arts and Crafts. He was already known as a freelance artist through exhibitions when, in 1934, he created a clinker-brick fountain for the Nymphenburg Porcelain Manufactory for a school in Munich-Ramersdorf. This fountain, which still survives today, features a small fish as a waterspout. In the years that followed, he designed relief inscriptions for numerous special commissions. The large relief panels for the Munich State Library remained a unique project within his body of work. His particular talent lay in the creation of so-called deep carvings, developed from the lithophanes of the 19th century, which made use of the light-and-shadow effect of thin porcelain. Lorch’s works were described as “children of light, of translucent delicacy”. Franz Xaver Lorch is especially renowned as the creator of deeply felt religious sculptures. His finely tuned sensitivity, combined with strong artistic vision, enabled him to endow the figures he created with life and an intimate, expressive character.
