About the Item

Rare ceramic plate by Roger Capron depicting an interior or theater scene, black-on-white enamel. Roger Capron (1922–2006) was a renowned French ceramist celebrated for his significant contributions to mid-20th-century ceramics and design. Born on September 4, 1922, in Vincennes, France, Capron developed an early interest in drawing, leading him to study at the École des Arts Appliqués à l'Industrie in Paris from 1939 to 1943. After a brief period teaching art in 1945, he relocated to Vallauris in 1946—a region steeped in pottery tradition. There, alongside Robert Picault and later Jean Derval, he co-founded 'l'Atelier Callis,' playing a pivotal role in the post-war renaissance of ceramics in the area. In 1952, Capron established his own ceramics factory in a repurposed pottery workshop in Vallauris. His creations, characterized by vibrant colors and intricate geometric designs, quickly garnered international acclaim, leading to collaborations with prominent retailers such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Gimbels
