About the Item

A striking pair of mid-century Swedish stoneware vases produced by Upsala-Ekeby during the early 1960s. The pieces correspond to models 5058M and 6019 (see photos of bases) and embody the sculptural and textural qualities that defined Scandinavian ceramic design of the period. The larger vase (model 5058M) features a rounded, organic form with a gently tapering neck and dramatic vertical glaze runs in deep charcoal tones cascading over a textured earthen surface. The volcanic, almost lava-like glaze contrasts beautifully with the warm natural clay body, giving the piece a strong sculptural presence. The smaller cylindrical vase (model 6019) presents a refined rhythmic relief pattern of vertical ribs combined with a subtly textured glaze. Around the rim, small circular accents in warm orange enamel provide a graphic decorative element that adds depth and visual contrast. The design language of both pieces is closely associated with the work of Mari Simmulson, one of the most influential artists working for Upsala-Ekeby during the mid-twentieth century. Simmulson joined the company in 1949 and became known for her bold sculptural forms, expressive textures, and richly nuanced glazes. Her work played a central role in establishing Upsala-Ekeby as one of the leading producers of artistic ceramics in Scandinavia during the 1950s and 1960s. Offered together as a curated pair, these vases create a beautifully balanced composition. The contrast between the rounded organic form and the structured cylindrical silhouette highlights the versatility of Swedish modern ceramics while maintaining a cohesive earthy palette. Displayed together they form a sophisticated decorative grouping that reflects the timeless appeal of Scandinavian mid-century design. Very good vintage condition with minor wear consistent with age and use. The glazed surfaces show natural variations inherent to studio ceramic production, contributing to the unique character of each piece. No significant chips or cracks observed. Dimension large round vase: height 20 cm/ 7 3/4", diameter 13 cm/ 5". Dimension smaller cylindrical vase: height 14.5 cm/ 5 3/4", diameter 8.5 cm/ 3 1/3". Weight as a set: 1155 g/ 2.55 lb
