About the Item

A remarkable and highly atmospheric 17th-century French ceramic boat jug from the Languedoc region, retaining a wonderfully time-worn yellow glaze and distinctive sculptural form developed for practical use aboard ship. Dating to the 1600s, vessels of this type were traditionally used for carrying and serving water or wine at sea. Their unusual construction reflects the practical demands of shipboard life, while the bold modelling and richly aged surface give the piece considerable decorative presence today. The jug is formed with a broad cylindrical lower body rising to a narrower neck and fitted with an unusual twisted rope-form handle, an especially attractive detail that lends the vessel a distinctly nautical character. Opposite the handle is the projecting pouring spout, organically modelled into the body, while the upper section retains its fitted cover. The entire surface is covered in a warm ochre-yellow glaze, now beautifully mellowed through centuries of age and use. Extensive fine crazing runs throughout the glaze, accompanied by areas of wear, staining, oxidation and losses that create the exceptionally rich patina expected of an early utilitarian ceramic vessel. The irregularities of the hand-formed body, the sculpted handle and the subtle variations within the glaze immediately distinguish this piece from later manufactured pottery. Its heavily aged surface gives it tremendous authenticity and visual character. Originating in Languedoc in southern France, an area with a long tradition of vernacular pottery production, this rare vessel represents an intriguing intersection of French ceramic history and maritime life. Today, it makes an exceptional decorative object for an interior centred around French country, Mediterranean, coastal, Old World or collection-driven design, while also appealing strongly to collectors of early European pottery, nautical antiques and primitive ceramics.
