On offer is an antique Mexican folk art pottery pitcher, most likely originating from the historic ceramics hub of Atzompa (Santa María Atzompa) in Oaxaca, Mexico. Known historically for its vibrant green glazes and highly detailed, appliquéd relief work, this regional style often depicts scenes celebrating agricultural life, indigenous heritage, and daily local customs. The pitcher blends geometric Mesoamerican patterns with symbols of agricultural abundance. The woman with the vessel under the pouring spout represents a traditional Oaxacan woman—likely a market vendor or a participant in a traditional festival like the Guelaguetza. She wears a wide-brimmed hat, carries a water or mezcal jug (cántaro) and features a long, thick braid hanging down her back. Her pleated skirt is highlighted with a darker, manganese-brown glaze wash to give it depth. Corn, or maize, is the sacred foundational crop of Mexico. The high-relief ears of corn, complete with textured kernels and peeled-back husks, celebrates harvest, fertility, and sustenance. The deep, repeating diamond and zig-zag step patterns mirror ancient Zapotec and Mixtec architectural motifs, famously seen on the stone ruins of Mitla in Oaxaca. These decorative elements are not carved into the pitcher. Instead, they were sculpted separately by hand and pressed onto the damp body of the vessel before firing. This results in the high-relief, three-dimensional look seen in the figures and geometric patterns. The rich, translucent emerald-green finish is a classic lead-based glaze (vidriado verde) traditional to Atzompa pottery. Potters in this region have used copper oxide formulations for generations to achieve this specific, glassy green appearance over a terracotta clay body. The unglazed, sandy-red bottom and the raw interior view confirm that the piece is fashioned from local Oaxacan red earthenware clay. The rough texture and lack of clean factory markings show it was entirely wheel-thrown or hand-molded and fired in a wood-burning kiln. With its thick, slightly uneven pooling of the glaze, the presence of minor firing cracks near the rim and handle and the visible wear/chipping on the bottom rim, reveal the rustic charm of older utilitarian folk pottery rather than modern, pristine tourist reproductions.
