About the Item

This striking antique French faience wine ewer, dating to the 18th century, is a fine example of traditional tin-glazed earthenware in the distinctive blue-and-white palette popular in Nevers and Rouen production. The ewer features a gracefully lobed, pear-shaped body set on a shaped foot, with a tall, curved handle and a pronounced pouring spout. It is surmounted by a domed lid topped with a rounded finial. The entire surface is richly hand-painted in cobalt blue on a white ground. The decoration showcases a charming Chinoiserie-inspired scene depicting a figure holding a parasol within a stylized landscape, surrounded by floral and foliate motifs. Additional ornamental detailing appears along the handle, spout, and shoulder, demonstrating the lively brushwork and decorative flair characteristic of French faience of this period. Crafted from tin-glazed earthenware, the piece exhibits the soft sheen typical of faience, and examples of this age commonly display light crazing and minor irregularities consistent with early handmade ceramics.
