About the Item

Rare early 18th century Dutch Delftware plate with Kakiemon-style quail decoration in vibrant iron-red, cobalt blue, and soft green This plate reflects the Dutch fascination with Japanese porcelain in the early 1700s, known as the Kakiemon style. The well of the plate features two quail beside bamboo, millet, and chrysanthemums with an insect, a motif inspired by Japanese designs but interpreted with Dutch tin-glazed earthenware techniques. The rim features alternating floral and geometric patterns, typical of high-quality Delftware of this period. Marked "AR" for Adriaan (van) Rijsselberg, the "De Grieksche A" workshop, Delft, 1701-1735, the most celebrated Delft workshop. A similar but restored example was in the Anton Philips collection, Christie's Amsterdam, sale 2797, lot 31. High quality of painting, showing fine brushwork and well-defined details. Good condition; only slight usual wear to the rim consistent with age.
