About the Item

English Delftware Blue White Chinoiserie Sauce Boat, London, Circa 1750–60 London, circa 1750–60 Tin glaze attempting silver — and pulling it off. This London delftware sauce boat takes the swooping rococo form of a mid-Georgian silver example and renders it in fragile earthenware: long curved spout, boldly waved rim edged in powdered blue, and a twisted crabstock handle dressed with blue scrolls. Around the body runs a freehand chinoiserie in rich cobalt — pagoda, flowering tree, tiered rockwork, pines, and island landscapes with flights of birds — while inside, a feathered border trims the rim and a single flower sprig sits at the base of the well. Sauce boats pushed delftware to its structural limits, and survivors with rim and handle intact are genuinely uncommon; this one carries a distinguished pedigree, with the labels of a Philadelphia private collection and Jonathan Horne Antiques of London (1982), the leading name in English pottery dealing of his generation. Britton illustrates similar examples in London Delftware, and the shape’s larger size, as here, is recorded almost always with European landscapes — making this chinoiserie-painted example a rare counterpart. Historical Context English delftware — tin-glazed earthenware painted in cobalt — was the blue and white of the Georgian table before creamware swept it aside, and its sauce boats rank among the most ambitious and shortest-lived of its forms. The color of the blue and the painting style point to a London workshop of the 1750s, the great decade of the rococo table. For the delftware collector this is a form piece with a paper trail: two collection labels, a documented dealer, and a published shape. (Ref: NY10788-umrx)
