About the Item

This group of six antique Dutch Delft blue and white chargers consists of three well-matched pairs, each hand painted in cobalt blue on a bright white tin-glazed ground. Made in the Netherlands during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the three pairs show the variety and visual strength of traditional Delft decoration. The pair at the top of the image measures 13.75 inches in diameter. It was hand painted at De Klaauw, known as “The Claw,” in Delft, circa 1800. The chargers feature a garden scene of flowering plants and scrolling leaves. Around the border, five panels containing individual tulip buds and scrolling vines alternate with deep blue reserves. Yellow-painted edges add warmth to the blue and white decoration. Each charger bears the underglaze blue mark of The Claw. The middle pair was hand painted at De Porceleyne Bijl, known as “The Axe,” circa 1780. Each charger is centered with a basket overflowing with flowers, surrounded by a border alternating between scrolling floral sprays and diamond-patterned panels. Strong cobalt blue painting stands out against the white tin-glazed ground, while yellow/ochre-painted rims provide a warm visual frame. The third pair, also dating to circa 1780, has a dense floral design centered by a bold flower surrounded by scrolling leaves and dotted ornament. The cobalt varies from deep, almost inky tones to softer washes, creating depth and movement. A more open version of the pattern continues around the border, and the yellow-painted edges add warmth to the blue and white decoration Together, the six chargers make an impressive wall display, creating a lively, harmonious arrangement. Condition: Excellent. Tiny edge chips invisibly restored. Price: $6,800 Top Pair, The Claw Dimensions: 13.75 inches diameter Decoration: Hand-painted garden scene with tulip-bud border panels Material: Delft tin-glazed earthenware Maker: De Klaauw, The Claw Date: Circa 1800 Middle Pair, The Axe Dimensions: 12.25 inches diameter Decoration: Hand-painted floral basket with alternating border panels Material: Delft tin-glazed earthenware Maker: De Porceleyne Bijl, The Axe Date: Circa 1780 Bottom Pair Dimensions: 13.5 inches diameter x 1.5 inches high Decoration: Hand-painted blue and white floral center with scrolling vines, and dotted ground Material: Delft tin-glazed earthenware Date: Circa 1780 Background of “The Claw” De Klaauw, "The Claw", was founded in Delft in 1661 by Cornelia Schoonhoven and Cornelis Cornelisz. van der Houve. Lambertus Sanderus purchased the successful factory in 1763. The following year, when Delft pottery owners were required to register their trademarks, Sanderus registered the factory’s distinctive stylized claw mark. De Klaauw continued production until 1840. Background of "The Axe" De Porceleyne Bijl, known as “The Porcelain Axe” or “The Axe,” was founded in Delft in 1657. The factory was purchased in 1739 by Justus Brouwer, who later shared its ownership with his son Hugo. In 1764, the factory registered its distinctive hatchet-shaped mark, which appears on pieces made during the later 18th century. De Porceleyne Bijl continued producing Delft pottery until 1803. Background of Delft Delft faience flourished in the Netherlands during the 17th century, with many of the finest pieces produced in the city of Delft. Potters coated their wares with an opaque white tin glaze and applied a transparent glaze over the painted decoration, giving the fired surface depth and brilliance and creating a convincing resemblance to imported porcelain. By about 1650, the technical skills of Delft potters and painters had advanced considerably, beginning what became known as the Golden Age of Delft pottery. Gerrit Paape recorded the methods used to produce Delft in The Delft Pottery Maker, published in 1794. The book was dedicated to Lambertus Sanderus, owner of De Porceleyne Claeuw, known in English as The Porcelain Claw.
