About the Item

A beautiful pair of Japanese Imari porcelain plates dating from the early 20th century. These decorative pieces display the classic and highly desirable Imari palette of deep cobalt blue, rich iron red and subtle gilt highlights, all arranged in an elegant floral design. Each plate features a central vase of flowering branches surrounded by panels of chrysanthemums and stylised foliage. The scalloped rims and vibrant hand-painted decoration create a striking display whether used on a dining table, sideboard, cabinet or wall. Imari wares were produced for both the Japanese domestic market and export trade and became highly fashionable in Europe for their bold colours and intricate decoration. These examples retain excellent colour and would make an attractive addition to any collection of oriental ceramics.
