About the Item

This vivid green-glazed plate was made by the Brameld family at their pottery at Swinton in Yorkshire during the Regency period. The whole surface is relief-molded with overlapping leaves set in a spiral, radiating from the center to a shaped and notched rim, so that the design turns as the eye follows it. The modeling is unusually varied, the leaves rendered with raised midribs and branching veins against grounds that shift between fine stippling and a close net-veined texture. The rich green glaze pools darker in the recesses and thins over the raised veins and the serrated edges, giving the tonal depth and movement that carry the whole effect of an otherwise undecorated plate. The Brameld family operated the pottery at Swinton in Yorkshire from 1806 until 1842. The works was renamed the Rockingham Works in 1826, in honor of the Marquis of Rockingham, uncle of the Bramelds’ landlord and patron Earl Fitzwilliam, and it took the style of the Royal Rockingham Works following the patronage of William IV from 1830. A plate of this date therefore belongs to the earlier Swinton phase of the family’s tenure, before either name was in use. Green-glazed earthenware was a fashionable and far less costly alternative to porcelain in the early nineteenth century, and revived a taste established in the Staffordshire of Whieldon and the young Josiah Wedgwood in the 1750s and 1760s. Naturalistic leaf-molded forms of this kind were well suited to the dessert service, where they carried fruit, nuts, and sweetmeats. Strong in color and entirely graphic in effect, a plate of this kind hangs as happily on a wall as it sits on a dresser shelf, and looks particularly well against dark paint or polished wood.
