About the Item

This is a striking hand-painted ceramic cabinet plate by celebrated American ceramic artist Waylande Gregory. Executed in Gregory's unmistakable modernist style, the plate features a stylized rooster rendered in crisp black, white, red, and burnished gold against a rich teal-blue ground. The whimsical composition combines bold graphic design with the folk-inspired imagery that made many of Gregory's decorative works so memorable. The rooster is animated by an elegantly sweeping tail, finely dotted plumage, and expressive details highlighted with metallic gold, creating a wonderful contrast against the saturated glaze. Although conceived as a decorative object, the plate possesses the sculptural presence and sophisticated color palette that characterize Gregory's finest work during the Art Deco period. The underside bears Gregory's hand-painted gilt signature. The plate remains in good vintage condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs. It exhibits only light wear consistent with age and careful use, including minor surface wear to some of the gilded decoration that is typical of vintage examples. A wonderful example of American studio ceramics by one of the twentieth century's most influential ceramic artists, equally at home displayed on a wall, easel, or within a collection of important decorative arts.
