About the Item

Carafe Hand Drawn Glass by J. Hill's Standard Dimensions: D 20 x H 35 cm. Materials: Glass Available in 3 different designs: Loop / Row / Over Each glass is available in both polished and unpolished finishes, please contact us. The series Hand Drawn Glass, designed and hand drawn by Irish artist Nigel Peake, explores a spontaneous approach to glass cutting. The pieces feature clean, elemental shapes, and use a spontaneous cutting motion that captures the fleeting movement of the drawing hand. Known for his paintings and drawings of built and unbuilt landscapes - interpreted in his books, textiles, porcelain and glass, Nigel has created a series of three tumblers of various sizes, a carafe, a decanter and a series of wood tops made by Gavin Rea (County Down) that can transform the pieces into containers at your will. A book of drawings and references, titled ‘Fieldwork’, accompanies the collection. Finding a small book of Nigel’s drawings on Irish landscape inspired the idea for the collection. It was compelling to work with his account of the textures and patterns so vivid in nature. ‘there is a time of year when the tops of the fields become visible’ - Nigel J. Hill’s Standard pieces marry contemporary design and traditional craftsmanship, celebrating the progressive, the time honoured and the handmade. Named for John Hill, a mysterious 18th-century figure who vanished from Irish shores but left behind a standard of such exquisite brilliance it might as well have been a love letter to lead crystal, the brand doesn’t just honour heritage - it toys with it. Hill’s “Standard” was never about sameness - it was a provocation. A wink. A dare across centuries. What if craftsmanship could be a little unruly? What if a whiskey tumbler could be an oracle? J. Hill’s Standard lives in that delightful tension - between legacy and invention, ritual and rupture. Their pieces are less objects, more odes: to landscape, to memory, to the stubborn joy of making things the slow way, the right way. They look like they’ve emerged from a collaboration between an ancient guild and an alien design council - part monastic relic, part Martian glassware.
