About the Item

An exceptional, fine and impressive vintage Elizabeth II English sterling silver claret jug with matching goblets; an addition to our range of drinks related silverware. This exceptional Victorian sterling silver set consists of a claret jug and two matching goblets. This impressive sterling silver claret jug has ewer shaped form onto a pedestal circular foot. The body of the jug is embellished with a fine and impressive applied alternating strapwork style leaf designs to the lower portion. The waisted neck flares to an undulating rim, which is ornamented with an applied moulded border. This antique claret jug is fitted with a fine and impressive cast sterling silver handle with leaf decoration to each terminal. Each goblet has a rounded bell shaped form onto a tapering circular knapped pedestal and circular foot. The goblets are each embellished with further applied strapwork, identical to that of the jug. This jug and goblets set was crafted by J B Chatterley & Sons Ltd in 1977; these items will have been crafted in the same year but due to the hallmarking system and assay offices the claret jug is struck with the date letter 'C' and the two goblets bear 'B' and 'C'. Condition This vintage jug and goblets set is a superior gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition. Each piece has been professionally polished and is in presentation condition. Full hallmarks struck to the surface of each item are all very clear. The neck of the jug is encircled with bead decoration flanking a broad band of chased decoration reflecting the identical design to that of the swag decoration. The circular spreading foot to each item and upper portion of each goblet are embellished with a circular convex bead decorated border in addition to a band of bead ornamentation to the rim and knop. An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Victorian English sterling silver claret jug, influenced by the Aesthetic Movement; an addition to our diverse silverware collection. This exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver claret jug has a circular rounded form onto a circular plateaued foot. The upper portion of the jug is encompassed with bands of bright cut engraved evolute scroll, vertical pale and oval motifs accented with a simplified leaf garland and delicate scrolling pattern to the rim, all influenced by the Aesthetic Movement. The lower portion of the body is embellished with large fan designs segmented with tri-lobed motifs; each large module incorporates a horizontal pale, matte pattern. The Victorian silver claret jug is fitted with a hinged hallmarked cover ornamented with a bright cut engraved leaf wreath design encompassing a contemporary crest of a stag's head erased. The cover is surmounted with a cast and applied leaf decorated thumbpiece, reflecting the shape of the fan designs to the body. This impressive jug is fitted with an exceptional embossed elongated S scroll handle featuring a bi-lobed ribbed formation and embellished with bright cut engraved oval motifs to either side, in addition to a scalloped, scrolling lower terminal. Either side of the lip is ornamented with a bright cut engraved simplified leaf design, in addition to a plain applied moulded border to the rim. The plateaued foot is embellished with further bright cut engraved garland designs, reflecting the ornamentation of the body and cover. The interior surface of the cover retains the original gilding. The underside of the foot bears the retailer's mark 'J. Mayer, Silversmith, Liverpool'. Condition This antique Victorian silver claret jug is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional presentation condition. The bright cut engraved decoration is very crisp. The jug has been professionally cleaned and is ready for use. Full hallmarks struck to the underside of the base and part hallmarks to the cover are very clear. An exceptional, fine and impressive pair of antique Victorian English sterling silver claret jugs made by Elkington & Co; an addition to our Victorian silverware collection These exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver jugs have a tapering ovoid body onto a circular domed foot, in a Classic ewer style. The waisted neck of the each jug is embellished with a bright cut engraved undulating band of stylised leaf decoration flanked by plain applied ornamentations in addition to a broad band of scroll and simplified Akroter designs. Each jug is ornamented with individual fine and impressive female Grecian style figures, the first bearing a vine terminating staff and holding out a handled bowl, another passive character featuring long braids in her hair and holding her skirt in one hand and a tied bundle of wheat in the other and the third holding in both hands grapes with flowing garments intertwining her body. The lower portion of each body is encircled with a band of lobed decoration incorporating a circular motif to each alternating terminal, all filled with a matte pattern. These antique silver jugs are fitted with hallmarked domed hinged covers surmounted with an impressive scrolling lobed thumbpiece and featuring an imposing scrolling hinge.
