About the Item

An exquisite and highly sculptural French Art Nouveau pewter pitcher by the renowned sculptor and founder Jean-Maurice Petizon, known by his artistic pseudonym "Petiz." This piece is a quintessential example of the organic, fluid aesthetics that defined the Parisian Belle Époque. The vessel features a dramatic, asymmetrical handle cast in the form of a lithe, semi-nude nymph or water naiad, whose graceful form appears to emerge naturally from the neck of the pitcher. The bulbous body is intricately adorned in high relief with a charming scene of playful putti (cherubs) nestled amongst swirling floral motifs and acanthus leaves, resting upon a base designed to mimic a naturalistic conch shell. Petizon was unique among his contemporaries for being both the sculptor and the master foundryman of his works, ensuring a level of detail and finish—particularly in the facial expressions and botanical textures—that set his pieces apart in the early 20th-century market. The underside bears the characteristic "Etain Garanti Paris" mark and the artist’s signature "Petiz" is cast in cursive on the lower side of the body.
