Chelsea Porcelain Pair of Octagonal Dishes Painted with Vegetables & Fruit Circa 1758-60 This pair of Chelsea porcelain deep octagonal dishes is finely painted with naturalistic groups of vegetables and fruit, each dish marked with a small brown anchor. The unusual deep octagonal form was designed for serving sweetmeats and preserved fruits at the Rococo dessert table. One dish is painted at the center with a large capped mushroom among carrots, turnips, and blackberries; the other with a peach, mushrooms, carrots, and gooseberries. Scattered sprays of vegetables, cherries, and foliage animate the wells, and a simple red-brown line traces each rim, leaving the vibrant central compositions the primary focus. The Chelsea factory (circa 1745-1769) was England’s first important porcelain manufactory, and the rarer brown anchor mark is found on wares of the later 1750s and 1760s, bridging the restrained naturalism of the red anchor style and the richer taste of the gold anchor years. Dishes such as this pair, with large, carefully observed edible subjects inspired directly by Meissen, carried Continental naturalism to the English dessert table. Their quality is reinforced by a distinguished provenance: the collection of Emil Mosbacher, Jr., and The Antique Porcelain Company of New Bond Street, among the foremost twentieth-century dealers in eighteenth-century porcelain, whose paper label one dish retains.
