About the Item

Surreal Distortion: Fornasetti "Themes & Variations" Plate #52 (Lina Cavalieri) Circa 1990s A striking and surreal porcelain wall plate from the iconic "Themes & Variations" (Tema e Variazioni) series by Atelier Fornasetti. This specific variation, Pattern Number 52, features the enigmatic face of Piero Fornasetti’s muse, the opera singer Lina Cavalieri, manipulated into a dramatic, elongated distortion. The image appears stretched vertically, reminiscent of an anamorphic projection or the haunting expressionism of Edvard Munch's The Scream. The graphic black and white printing on the white porcelain ground emphasizes the stark, modern quality of the design. Markings: Reverse: Bears the standard Fornasetti mark: a white hand holding a brush within a black square, inscribed Tema e Variazioni / Fornasetti Milano / Made in Italy. The pattern number 52 is indicated near the mark. Hanging: Pierced with two original holes on the foot rim for wall suspension. Condition: Excellent vintage condition. No chips, cracks, or wear to the transfer print. Measurements: Diameter: 10 1/4 inches (26.0 cm) Height: 1 inch (2.5 cm) Historical Context: Piero Fornasetti found the face of Lina Cavalieri in a 19th-century French magazine and became obsessed with her classical, enigmatic beauty. She became the central motif of his life's work, inspiring over 350 variations. In this series, he deconstructed her face—turning it into a coin, a sun, a thief, or, as seen here, a piece of optical art—proving that a single image could spark endless creativity.
