About the Item

A monumental porcelain group by Meissen Porcelain Manufactory depicting an allegorical geography lesson centered on study, observation, and mapping of the world. At the heart of the composition stands a large classical female figure, the teacher, positioned slightly elevated and holding a tablet on which she is actively drawing a map taken directly from the globe before her. One hand steadies the board while the other traces the continental outlines, mirroring the finely painted cartography on the sphere. Encircling the globe are winged putti who engage with it from every side. One points intently toward Africa, another leans forward examining the surface, while others confer and gesture across the mapped continents, creating a lively sense of movement and instruction. Behind the figures rises a tall palm tree adorned with gilt laurel wreaths, adding vertical balance and classical ornament to the scene. The base is richly detailed as rocky terrain and incorporates numerous scholarly attributes that reinforce the academic theme. Stacked books appear behind the teacher, while rulers and measuring tools rest along the ground, and a telescope lies across the foreground, symbolizing observation and scientific learning. These elements are modeled with the same precision as the figures, integrating seamlessly into the composition. The painting throughout is of exceptional quality, with softly modulated flesh tones, pastel garments in turquoise, rose, lavender, and pale blue, and carefully applied gilded accents. Most striking is the hand painted globe, where continents, coastlines, and fine linear markings are rendered with extraordinary clarity and precision. Large original Meissen figural groups of this ambitious scale and complexity are increasingly difficult to find. This example is made in two primary sections and bolted together for stability, a typical construction method for large Meissen compositions. The underside bears the Meissen blue crossed swords mark in underglaze, confirming its origin. The combination of impressive scale, narrative richness, and remarkably fine painting—particularly on the globe—places this group among the more accomplished monumental Meissen porcelain works encountered on the market.
