About the Item

We are delighted to offer you an extraordinary piece of Meissen Art Nouveau porcelain art: This unique object is the first known example of an Art Nouveau vase by Theodor Grust to appear on the art market, previously known only as a design drawing. In Johannes Just's standard work 'Meissener Jugendstil-Porzellan' - 'Meissen Art Nouveau Porcelain' (Edition Leipzig, 1983), this vase appeared exclusively as a drawing – now we are pleased to present it as a porcelain vase of exceptional size and quality as part of our range. The monumental vase, reminiscent of a slender amphora in shape, features a colourful painted decoration around its circumference with an extraordinary narrative density: between sculpturally formed girls' heads on the shoulders below the neck and a finely executed tulip trellis on the lower wall, a lively 'centaur dance' moves across a wide landscape. The base and shoulder of the vase are accented with ornamental gold decoration, the two sculpted girls' heads serve as handles instead of the typical amphora handles, and a mounted round base gives the work additional stability. The composition combines typical elements of German Art Nouveau – symbolist figures, natural ornamentation and flowing lines – with the technical brilliance of Meissen porcelain painting around 1900. This extraordinary model is an outstanding example of Theodor Grust's ambitious designs during Meissen's Art Nouveau phase. The fact that the vase was previously only known from a published drawing lends the specimen now on offer particular museum relevance. With a height of 63.5 cm, it is also one of the manufactory's large-format and representative works. The reference book 'Meissen Art Nouveau Porcelain' by Johannes Just, featuring an illustration of Theodor Grust's design drawing, is included in this offer. Designed by THEODOR GRUST (1857-1919): In February 1898, he was employed as a painter to assist the head painter at the Meissen manufactory. From 1905 to 1909, he held the position of head of painting. He produced numerous designs for vase shapes and services, as well as painterly designs for landscape, figure and plant decorations. Many of his form and decoration designs are now considered among the most important examples of Meissen Art Nouveau. Design of model R 108 circa 1897.
