English Creamware Mocha Mug, Ochre Slip Ground, Banded, Circa 1790–1810 Staffordshire, circa 1790–1810 Georgian minimalism in a tankard: an early creamware mocha mug dressed head to foot in warm ochre slip, its only ornament the banding — a broad white collar at the rim on a fine black line, one crisp white ring bisecting the body, and paired white bands with a black line above the flared foot, every ring laid down by the turner’s hand as the pot spun on the lathe. The strap handle finishes in a small molded foliate sprig, an unexpected refinement on what was honest tavern pottery. This is the earlier banded production of the mocha family, before the dendritic “seaweed” patterns took over — the look that modern collectors and decorators prize most, the ochre-and-cream palette sliding effortlessly into contemporary rooms.
