Pearlware Blue and White Chinoiserie Shell-Edge Oval Dish, Probably Leeds Circa 1790 This large oval pearlware dish is painted in underglaze blue with a lively chinoiserie scene, a robed figure beneath a parasol gesturing toward a fenced pavilion and pagoda set in an island garden of stylised trees and shrubs, with birds scattered across the sky. A diaper band encloses the well, and the moulded rim is edged with feathered leaves and heightened with blue swags. Marks Unmarked, as is usual for blue-painted pearlware of this type. Dimensions Length: 17 inches (43.2 cm) Width: 13 inches (33.0 cm) Height: 1 inch (2.5 cm) Provenance Earle D. Vandekar of Knightsbridge. Condition Good, with no restoration; several small frits to the rim. Historical Context Pearlware is a refined earthenware whose glaze, tinted with a little cobalt, casts a faint blue over the white body and sets off underglaze blue decoration to advantage; it is this bluish glaze that distinguishes pearlware from the earlier creamware. Introduced around 1779 — Josiah Wedgwood marketed his version as “Pearl White,” though Staffordshire potters were making a comparable “China Glaze” at much the same date — it became the standard ground for the inexpensive blue-painted chinoiserie that answered the public taste for Chinese export porcelain. The freely painted scene belongs to a large family of such Chinese designs; the figure beneath a parasol derives ultimately from Chinese export prototypes, while the pagoda, fence and trees follow the familiar formula of the period. Wares of this kind were rarely marked, and closely comparable dishes and plates are variously attributed to Leeds, to Staffordshire potters such as William Greatbatch, and to Liverpool. The crisp painting and moulded rim seen here are consistent with the better Yorkshire and Staffordshire production, and a Leeds origin is likely though not certain. (Ref: NY10560-iuux)
