About the Item

Signed McWhorter Sculptural Art Pottery Covered Vessel with Surreal Wood Finial, circa 2000. A captivating and highly unique example of contemporary American studio ceramics by Georgia artist Don McWhorter. This exceptional, large-bellied lidded vessel beautifully demonstrates McWhorter’s mastery of form, glaze manipulation, and mixed-media sculpture. The main body features an earthy, hand-thrown stoneware silhouette enveloped in a multi-toned matte chartreuse and dripping sage-green glaze. The heavy, matching ceramic lid creates a striking visual contrast, finished in a brilliant, deep cobalt blue pool glaze that yields glossy metallic undertones. This piece is in good condition with no chips or cracks and measures approximately 7.5" in diameter x 9" high. #9110 Elevating the piece from functional craft to high-concept sculpture is its remarkable, hand-carved hardwood finial crowning the lid. Shaped like a stylized crescent moon or abstract boat, it supports three intricately turned wooden columns capped with soft celadon-glazed ceramic finial buttons. Wispy, delicate wire "whiskers" project outwards from the central wood carving, adding a layer of whimsical, kinetic energy and mid-century modern aesthetic flair. Fully incised and dated on the base by the artist
