About the Item

A thoughtfully assembled group of early 20th century British hotel silver-plated table wares, each bearing institutional engravings that speak to their working lives. The focal point is the sculptural “pirate-spout” coffeepot, marked Tontine Hotel, Greenock (Scotland). Its exaggerated spout, restrained banding, and applied foliate mount give it unexpected personality while maintaining the practical solidity of Edwardian hotel silver. Accompanying the coffeepot is a pair of salt and pepper shakers stamped with the Tontine crest and mark of R.P. & C.C. Ltd., along with a sauceboat engraved Hotel Regent (London), manufactured by Meriden & Company. Though from different establishments, together they read as an organically collected service. These pieces embody the quiet durability of institutional silver — made for daily use rather than presentation. The softened plating, tonal variations, and visible wear create depth that cannot be replicated through polishing. They feel particularly at home in British country house interiors: layered on a sideboard, beside a stack of ironstone, or integrated into a pantry display where polish is less important than atmosphere.
