About the Item

One of the most spectacular pieces of Swedish Grace/Art Deco artisanry we have ever seen, this covered bonbonnière by C. G. Hallberg features a series of crested birds and grape vines in bas relief which ornament a bulbous body, surmounted by an elaborate crested lid and resting on ball feet covered with clusters of berries. The urn is dedicated to Victor Carlsson, a civil engineer, on his 50th birthday, June 1, 1926. The form of this piece, and the berry-form feet, is reminiscent of a bonbonnière designed by George Jensen a few years earlier, but this example is much finer and more elaborate. Hallberg, founded in 1860, was one of Scandinavia's leading goldsmiths and jewelers, with a prominent storefront in Stockholm. It served as jeweler to the Swedish Royal Court, and produced an array of goods for institutions and residences, although this piece is the most elaborate we have seen. It is fully marked with the Hallberg hallmarks on the base.
