About the Item

Combining Israeli artistic design with fine Italian silversmithing, this sterling silver openwork dreidel is an elegant interpretation of one of Judaism's most beloved ceremonial objects. Inspired by the decorative traditions of Jerusalem Judaica yet cast and produced in Italy during the late twentieth century, the piece beautifully merges intricate ornamental design with exceptional craftsmanship. The body of the dreidel is formed as a finely pierced cube, each of its four sides displaying one of the traditional Hebrew letters—נ, ג, ה, and ש—executed in bold raised relief. Rather than standing alone, each letter is seamlessly woven into elaborate compositions of scrolling vines, stylized foliage, and flowing arabesques, creating richly ornamented architectural panels. The openwork construction allows light to penetrate the interior, lending remarkable depth and shadow to every surface. The remaining panels are equally refined, decorated with graceful foliate scrolls, fleur-de-lis inspired motifs, and intertwined botanical ornament framed within crisp cast borders. The dense relief is heightened by a dark oxidized finish recessed beneath polished silver highlights, emphasizing every detail of the design. The underside is centered by a finely modeled six-petaled flower enclosed within a geometric quatrefoil, itself surrounded by scrolling foliage radiating toward the corners of the cube. This thoughtful treatment of the base demonstrates that every visible surface was carefully considered, transforming the object into a complete work of decorative sculpture. The upper face is inscribed with the word "Jerusalem" together with the artist's signature, acknowledging the Israeli inspiration behind the design while reflecting its connection to the rich tradition of modern Jerusalem Judaica. Rising from the center is a finely cast baluster-form handle with faceted sides terminating in a delicate foliate knop. Below, the sharply tapered spinning point is similarly finished, balancing the proportions of the piece while ensuring its functionality as a traditional Hanukkah dreidel. 2ozt Marked at the top of the dreidel.

A Silver Modern Dreidel, 20th Century

A Silver Modern Dreidel, 20th Century

Located in New York, NY

A Silver Modern Dreidel made in the 20th Century. This Silver modern Dreidel is uncommonly made. The sides of the dreidel are square and it has the Hebrew letters Nun, Gimmel, Hey, and Shin prominently displayed but that's where the commonality stops. The top handle is long and cylindrical and the bottom point where the dreidel spins is very similar. We have seen this design on some bone dreidels. The top is slightly tilted upwards and has designs that resemble spherical beads encircled by filigree which are common on some Israeli Kiddush goblets. Even the letters which are the smae as most dreidels yet have unique designs. The Gimmel is crowned with an eight-branch Menorah, the Nun is placed within an oil pourer...
