About the Item

Representing the sophisticated artistry of Austrian synagogue silver during the mid-nineteenth century, this impressive pair of Torah finials (Rimonim), dated 1862, embodies the rich decorative ceremonial Judaica of the period. Their graceful architectural silhouette, finely chased ornament, and harmonious proportions reflect the high standards of craftsmanship expected of important synagogue commissions. Each finial is constructed upon a broad circular spreading foot, encircled by deeply chased scrolling acanthus leaves, flowering vines, and foliate ornament rendered in crisp relief. Rising from the base is a substantial baluster-form shaft divided by boldly modeled knop collars, each enriched with repoussé floral and scrolling leaf decoration. The alternating smooth cylindrical sections and richly ornamented knops create an elegant progression upward while emphasizing the sculptural quality of the design. The domed upper gallery forms the visual centerpiece of each finial. Executed with finely pierced openwork, the canopy is decorated with alternating floral medallions and scrolling foliage that reveal darkened negative spaces beneath, producing a lively contrast between solid silver and open ornament. Each repoussé blossom projects proudly from the surface, lending remarkable depth and dimensionality to the composition. Suspended from the perimeter of the canopy are the original silver bells, individually mounted to swing freely and produce their characteristic chime whenever the Torah is carried in procession. Both decorative and symbolic, the bells animate the design while preserving one of the most recognizable features of traditional Torah ornaments. Above the canopy, a gently tapering neck supports an elegant pierced crown composed of repeating oval openings surmounted by engraved stylized leaves. The restrained upper finial provides a graceful conclusion to the composition, balancing the richly ornamented lower sections without overwhelming the overall silhouette. Every surface demonstrates careful hand-finishing, from the crisp chasing of the scrolling foliage to the finely modeled floral motifs and precisely pierced decoration. The interplay between polished silver, repoussé ornament, and openwork creates a striking visual rhythm, allowing light to move freely across the pair while highlighting the exceptional workmanship. Both ceremonially significant and artistically refined, these Torah finials stand as fine examples of Austrian Judaica from the second half of the nineteenth century. Hallmarked on each finial. 18.33ozt Total Weight
