About the Item

Pair of candlesticks, Empire style, France, ca. 1810, gilded and patinated bronze, round base, fluted shaft, patina condition Height 29.5 cm, base diameter 13 cm The shaft has the typical shape of an Egyptian column with a tapered base; the round base features finely chiseled motifs. The candlesticks are in their unrestored condition and may show wax residue, stains, and discoloration. The Empire style is the final phase of Classicism and was the dominant artistic movement in France under Napoleon I (ca. 1800–1815). It served as a lavish, ceremonial style intended to demonstrate the ruler’s power and imperial claims Ancient Models: Strongly inspired by the architecture of ancient Rome and Greece, with influences from Egyptian architecture. Strict Symmetry: Clear, straight lines, right angles, and large, monumental forms. Typical Motifs: Laurel wreaths, eagles, palmettes, sphinxes, and caryatids (statues serving as supporting columns).
