About the Item

This elegant sterling silver mezuzah case, created in Jerusalem in 1990 by Shuki Freiman, is a refined example of contemporary Israeli Judaica rooted in traditional symbolism and meticulous craftsmanship. Executed in .925 sterling silver, the mezuzah presents a harmonious dialogue between sculptural form, openwork design, and symbolic ornament. The front features a prominent rectangular compartment housing the mezuzah parchment, its surface richly pierced with flowing foliate scrolls, blossoming flowers, clusters of fruit, and delicately rendered birds perched among intertwining branches. These natural motifs, rendered in an openwork technique, create a sense of lightness and movement while allowing subtle depth and shadow to animate the surface. Affixed behind the front compartment is a fully integrated backplate, designed in visual continuity with the front. The backplate rises into a regal crown at the top—an allusion to divine sovereignty—flanked by two finely engraved rampant lions, traditional symbols of strength, guardianship, and the Tribe of Judah. From this crowned upper section, the engraved and pierced decoration flows downward along both sides in a balanced, symmetrical rhythm, forming an ornate frame that elevates and protects the central mezuzah compartment. The overall composition is both architectural and organic: structured in its vertical format yet softened by the abundance of natural imagery. At the lower edge, the piece is stamped with the artist’s initials along with the “925” mark, attesting to its sterling silver purity and authorship. This mezuzah case exemplifies Shuki Freiman’s distinctive Jerusalem-based work—combining reverence for Jewish tradition with refined modern craftsmanship—and stands as a meaningful and visually striking object for the Jewish home. 6.26ozt.
