About the Item

An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Victorian English sterling silver two handled tray; an addition to our silver serving tray collection. This exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver tray has an oval form. The surface of the tray is encircled with fine bright cut engraved intertwining decoration, accented with scrolling foliate and floral designs. The decoration to the surface of the tray incorporates a shaped vacant cartouche to the centre. The raised rounded border is encompassed with fine and impressive bright cut engraved decoration to the plateau, reflecting the decoration to the surface. This exceptional tray is fitted with two oval handles accented with swept terminals, all embellished with simplified foliate festoon and floral designs. The tray is supported by four bun style feet and the underside bears a 'lozenge mark' which certifies the patent of this piece on 13th March 1874 with the UK Patent Office. Such versatile examples in this desirable medial size, suitable as a drinks tray and three-piece service tea tray, are highly desirable. This decorative sterling silver serving tray with handles is a refined and versatile piece, ideal for presenting drinks, canapés or afternoon tea, while also serving as an elegant display item on a sideboard or coffee table, where its craftsmanship and polished finish add a sense of occasion and timeless sophistication. Condition This antique Victorian silver tray is a superior gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition. The bright cut engraved decoration is all very crisp. Full hallmarks struck to the underside of the tray are all very clear; the hallmarks are struck deeply due to the superior gauge of silver. Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this piece of Victorian silverware.
