About the Item

Gefle Plate “Mullbär” with putti figures, c. 1880/90s. Round faience plate with relief decoration and transfer-printed vine motif in brown tone, centrally decorated with putti figures (cherubs/angels). Origin: Gefle, Sweden. Manufacturer: Gefle. Pattern: “Mullbär”. Material: Faience. Dimensions: D. 34 cm. Period: c. 1880/90s. Condition: Wear, discoloration and cracks. Gefle Porcelainsfabrik was founded in 1910 in Gävle, but faience production in the area dates back to the 19th century. In the late 1800s, transfer-printed and relief-decorated faience plates were highly popular, produced in large numbers for both household use and export. The “Mullbär” decoration is a typical example of the naturalistic ornamentation of the time, here enriched with classical putti motifs inspired by Renaissance and Baroque imagery.
