About the Item

A whimsical set of three silver rabbit or hare shape menu holders made by Gorham Manufacturing Company in Birmingham, England in 1913.  This set is very unusual and highly collectable. Each place holder has a cast model of a hare or bunny rabbit alert with ears up, sitting atop a plain plinth with a slot at the back for the card or menu. Originally silver gilt, they still retain a light hint of the gilding. They are each silver hallmarked for Gorham Manufacturing Company, Birmingham, England, 1913.  Founded in Providence, Rhode Island in 1831, Gorham was renowned for the excellent quality of its silverware, and was used by the White House during numerous administrations, notably a tea service for Mary Todd Lincoln purchased in 1859 (later presented to the National Museum of American History in 1957) and a commission from Mrs. Ulysses S. Grant to create a Century Vase to commemorate the country's one-hundredth anniversary.  Gorham began manufacturing in Birmingham, England in 1909, making the same quality items that they were renowned for in the US. This wonderful set of rabbit-shaped menu card holders is from that era.  They come in their original fitted silk and burgundy velvet lined presentation case and are in beautiful condition
